A physician who prescribes medication based solely on electronic communication does not meet the standards of medical practice and can be subject to disciplinary action. The State of Washington Medical Quality Assurance Commission considers this practice to be unprofessional conduct under RCW 18.130.180(4). Physicians who treat or prescribe over the Internet are practicing medicine and must possess appropriate licensure in all jurisdictions where patients reside.
