Frequently Asked Questions from Applicants
Basic Telepsychiatry Etiquette
Evidence Based Telementalhealth
On average, we receive over a hundred CVs and letters of interest and over a hundred telephone calls every month from very highly qualified psychiatrists. There is a lot of interest in this quickly growing field. Unfortunately, it would take many hours every week to answer all of the questions. Often times, by the time we have been able to sort through all of the CVs and contact people, they have already found another job, or they sent in their CV just to get a call back so that they could get their questions answered.
We have a very extensive "Frequently Asked Questions" section for Applicants, for Managed Care Companies, for Patients, and for Primary Care Doctors.
The vast majority of your questions will be answered in much detail in the FAQ sections. If, after reading these you still have questions, please feel free to contact us by email, and we will call you back.
Because of the sheer volume of calls, letters of interest, and CVs, we have established an application process. If you are seriously interested in working as an Independent Contractor for California Telepsychiatrists/American Telepsychiatrists, please SUBMIT AN APPLICATION and provide references.
We will review and contact EVERY applicant who completes the application process and will interview you via teleconference. For those physicians selected, we will then have you complete the credentialing process.
California Telepsychiatrists/American Telepsychiatrists uses the credentialing service of the Federation of State Medical Boards.
FEDERATION CREDENTIALS VERIFICATION SERVICE (FCVS)
Verifying credentials is an essential building block of medical regulation - and FCVS leads the way with permanent records and data security.
FCVS establishes a permanent repository of primary-source verified credentials for physicians and physician assistants, saving duplicate efforts by state medical boards.
Established in 1996 FCVS has verified the credentials of more than 127,000 physicians to date. FCVS collects and stores high-quality, primary-source verification of core credentials, which include physician identity, medical education, graduate medical education, examination history, Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification and disciplinary history. Primary-source verification ensures that state medical boards receive information verified directly from the source, eliminating the potential for fraudulent documentation.
FCVS lightens the workload of credentialing staff and reduces duplication of effort.
Using this system allows us to provide a credentialing process that will be acceptable to the vast majority of sites where you might be placed thus speeding up the process of placement, and it also allows us to more quickly license physicians in additional states if needed for staffing purposes.
CMS Publishes Final Hospital Telemedicine Credentialing Standards
On May 5, 2011, CMS published a final rule revising the hospital conditions of participation (COP) related to the credentialing and privileging of physicians who provide telemedicine services. CMS includes both teleradiology (non-simultaneous) services and telehealth (simultaneous) services within the definition of telemedicine. In short, the final rule allows the governing body of a hospital or critical access hospital (CAH) to rely upon the credentialing and privileging decisions made by a distant-site hospital or telemedicine entity when making its own decisions on privileges for the individual distant-site physicians and practitioners providing such services. Certain conditions must be met under this rule, including a written agreement with the distant-site hospital or telemedicine entity to ensure that the distant-site entity, acting as a contractor of services, furnishes its services in a manner that enables the hospital or CAH to comply with all applicable COPs and standards for the contracted services, including the credentialing and privileging requirements regarding its physicians and practitioners providing telemedicine services. The rule is effective July 5, 2011.

Physician Applicants to FCVS
Applicants who complete the verification process establish a permanent, lifetime portfolio of primary-source verified credentials - allowing quick, easy and inexpensive access
to medical credentials. These documents can be used throughout the applicant's career for state licensure, hospital privileges, employment and professional memberships. For physicians, this service
is extremely valuable for those graduating from medical schools outside the U.S. or Canada, where verification is often time consuming, costly and difficult.
To learn more about the benefits of the Credentials Verification Service, see our Benefits section.
Once credentialed, we will add you to our panel of physicians thus making you immediately eligible for private fee-for-service telepsychiatry patients through our program (this comes with EMR, electronic prescribing, IT support, advertising, and scheduling/billing). Being on the panel will then place you in position for placement at an affiliated facility when such positions become available.
California Telepsychiatrists/American Telepsychiatrists is an equal opportunity organization and does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, sex, age, non-disqualifying physical or mental disability, national origin, sexual orientation, or any other basis covered by local law.
